Filters

Filters

Filtration is a unit process widely used in water and wastewater treatment for the removal of particulate materials commonly found in water in this process water passes through a filter medium, and particulate materials either accumulate on the surface of the medium or are collected through its depth. Filters have been found effective for removing particulate of all size ranges including algae, colloidal compounds, viruses, asbestos fiber, and colloidal clay particulates, provided that proper design parameters are used.
A wide range of media is utilized in filtration system . Typical examples include screens with openings of 1-100 ?m and granular materials, usually sand , with sizes ranging from 0.1 to 10 mm and activated carbon.

Tank- type Pressure Filter
There are several types of so-called pressure filters available, each performing specialized task. A single description of the equipment mechanics is sufficient to understand the principal.
A typical filter consists of a tank, the filter media, and valves or a controller to direct the filter through its various cycles – typically service, backwash and rinse.

Filtration can be achieved by using the following:

• Function

Sand is a filtration Media used to remove turbidity , mud & suspended solids.
Sand filter consists of  :

1- Control valve:

It is an automatic operation. The control valve controls the backwash process
through the filter:

Water enters the unit of the inlet , flows through the tube then out the distributor
up through the media and out the drain line.

Service position :
Raw water inters through the inlet to the media then out the tube to get the required
water through the outlet.

2- Pressure vessel
: which contain the media
Vessel material is fiberglass.

3- Media  : Sand

2. Carbon filters

Function

The activated carbon adsorbs traces of chlorine or other oxidants which can damage the
R.O membranes ,cation resin, and organics which foul strongly basic anion resins.

Carbon can also be used to remove taste, odors and other impurities.

When granular carbon beds are used for dechlorination service, the carbon’s capacity is essentially infinite and no regenerative process is employed. Regular backwashing is usually adequate to
remove suspended matter filtered from the water, bacterial slimes that have formed , and to expose
fresh surfaces for contact with the chlorine.
Carbon used to remove dissolved organic matter, however, has a finite capacity that is determined
by its properties and the nature of the organic matter.

3. Sediment &Carbon Cartridge Filters

• Function

In cartridge filter the water flows through the thick wall of the filter where the
particles are trapped throughout the complex openings in the medium. The filter
may be constructed of cotton, cellulose or polypropylene.

Cartridges are usually disposable .
